A woman named Olena Kagui was doing something many people do on the subway: she was scrolling through Facebook. Something made her stop though: it was a pit bull at a shelter in Brooklyn, New York that was slated to be euthanized. There was something about his face and his incredibly sad eyes that gave her pause. The dog, a pit bull named Smiley, was described as outgoing and friendly. He was house trained, loved to play and really loved squeaky toys. He was abandoned at the shelter not for his behavior, but because his family found out they were having a baby.
Since he arrived at the shelter, no one was interested in Smiley. That meant he was going to be euthanized if he didn’t find a home sooner rather than later. No one was interested in Smiley, but Olena was and she talked her husband into fostering him. Olena and her husband got in touch with Pound Hounds Res-Q group and they would pull Smiley from the shelter as long as there was a foster home lined up. It worked out perfectly; Smiley was neutered and then arrived in Olena’s home. He was very nervous when he arrived, however. He was house trained and knew not to jump on furniture or chew anything other than toys, but he was restless and refused to make eye contact with Olena.
Olena tried taking him for a walk and he pulled so hard she had rope burns on her hands. However, with time, things got better. Smiley settled in and calmed down and became very affectionate. He’s become more confident, knows his name and will make eye contact and wag his tail. Olena got a front clip harness to make walking him much easier, too. Best of all, Olena and her husband plan to adopt Smiley!
