Dog Dragged into Shelter by Owner

April Livingston | March 31st, 2018

There was an incredibly sad scene outside of the Harris County Animal Shelter in Houston, Texas recently. A woman named Ann Flores observed a dog that had thrown his body on the ground in the parking lot of the shelter, trying his hardest to resist his owner who was trying to drag him inside. A second woman, who was with the first woman was also dragging a second dog inside the shelter. Both women pulled, and both dogs resisted and refused to stand up and walk inside. It was like they knew what was happening to them.

Ann Flores and her friend were at the shelter because her friend wanted to adopt a dog, but the scene outside broke their hearts. Ann took photos and video of the incident, which she shared with volunteers from the shelter. The Harris County Animal Shelter shared the video on social media, and that’s when the community worked to rally around the dogs, named Truman and Mandi. The overcrowded shelter had actually scheduled the two dogs to be euthanized, so Kellie Donoghue from the Grace Mercy Love German Shepherd Rescue quickly stepped in to save the dogs.

The dogs were absolutely terrified and had to be carried out to Kellie’s car. After riding with her for about twenty-five minutes, Truman warmed up to her and his tail began to wag. Truman is now living with a foster family and though he is heartworm positive, he just loves people. The other dog, Mandi is now also in a foster home. She is also heartworm positive and has mange and infected eyes.

The pair has a long road ahead of them, but they are working to get healthy and learn to trust people for the first time in their lives.
