Dog and Cat have Unbreakable Bond

April Livingston | March 1st, 2019

Gracie passed away about a year ago, but the bond between the dog and her best friend a cat named Baby Grey has not been broken. While many dogs and cats are not friends, that was certainly not the case for Baby Grey and Gracie. Even after the dog is gone, Baby Grey still shows up in the yard for her playdate with her doggy friend. Gracie’s owner says the cat sits at her glass sliding door, waiting for her good friend to appear. She sometimes sits there for 30 minutes or longer, ever hopeful that her best friend is coming to see her.

It all started over two years ago, says Gracie’s owner Shea Belew Brennaman. Shea is a fourth grade teacher in Decatur, Alabama and she says the cat, who her family calls Baby Gray, began making visits. Gracie was a guard dog, but she was much more interesting in making friends with visitors than she was scaring them off from her yard. Gracie was an American Eskimo dog who loved to be outside, so that’s where she spent most of her time. She loved the outdoors and was protective of her home, but really just loved to be around other animals.

It wasn’t uncommon for Gracie to be seen being friendly with even small creatures like chipmunks, hawks, and even rabbits. So, when Baby Grey wandered into her yard, the two became fast friends. The dog and cat were frequently spotted sharing treats and sunbathing together—that was their favorite pastime. Gracie was very brave, too: she once saved her owner from a snake attack when she was a puppy. She was also very sweet with her doggie sister, a Yorkie. But in 2017, just after Gracie turned 12, she began to slow down dramatically. Her owner took her to the vet and it was determined that she had an aggressive form of lymphoma. In her final days, she spent time with her cat friend, just cuddling and being together.

Just a month after her diagnosis, Gracie passed away. Baby Grey kept coming back, though. Perhaps it was to see her friend or just because she wanted to be in the yard. She often is seen sitting at the door, then sunbathing in her favorite spot where she had some of her best memories with her doggy friend.
