Maelle Girard and her boyfriend Gilles Manzato recently purchased a home in their native area of Bali. After that purchase, they needed furniture. So the pair was heading to a local furniture store to make another purchase when they spotted something strange. It was a tiny brown animal that was in a grassy area along the side of the road. They were on a scooter, so they stopped the vehicle to get a closer look. What they realized was it wasn’t a wild animal, it was a little puppy. Not only that, but the dog was all alone and was in terrible shape. The puppy was trying to hide in the grass, so they weren’t sure at first if he was even alive or not. Thankfully he was, but he needed medical care right away.
The actually kept driving to the furniture store, but couldn’t stop thinking about the puppy, so they went back to help him. When they arrived, he was trying to stand and the moment they approached the puppy ran toward them. They began asking if anyone knew who the dog belonged to, but no one knew so they took him home with them. The puppy, who they named Ika, was very frail and too young to be alone. She also had very little fur because she had scabies. Things were rough for Ika at first, because she was exhausted and in pain.
Maelle and Gilles got medicated oil from a veterinarian to help her skin and soon Ika healed and her fur grew back. One she began to feel better, Ika’s dominant and strong personality began to emerge. The loyal, protective dog was confident once again. Everywhere they went with Ika, people told Maelle her dog was good for ceremonies. She later heard that brown dogs with black faces were commonly sacrificed in the area, making her even more relieved she saved Ika’s life. The couple has since adopted two more Balinese dogs into their family.
