Suki the Chihuahua has been known to turn heads. When a woman named Sadie Cox first laid eyes on the dog, she couldn’t believe what she saw. Suki was out on a walk with his owner and he was so overweight that he could barely walk. His owner was having trouble caring for him, which meant he weighed 19 pounds—13 pounds over his ideal weight. So, Sadie decided to take a chance and asked Suki’s owner if she could help care for the dog if he was having trouble doing so, and he agreed.
So, Sadie and Suki headed home together and it quickly became clear how bad the little dog’s situation had become: he couldn’t even lift his leg to pee without falling over. The road wasn’t going to be easy for little Suki, however. He was so overweight that it was nearly impossible for him to stand up for extended periods of time. He had to lie down to eat meals, got out of breath walking from one side of a room to the other, and he was constantly panting. He was scared of nearly everything, which made Sadie think he had not spent much time outdoors. But she wasn’t ready to give up on Suki.
Suki went to the vet, where he was placed on prescription food to help him lose weight and medication to help with his joints. Then, Suki and Sadie starting taking short walks together. At first, it was just for a minute or two until he gained strength and lost some weight. People would point and stare at Suki when he went outside, but he and Sadie kept going. That hard work paid off, too: Suki lost 10 pounds in five months and is almost at his ideal weight. He still has some weight to lose, but he’s well on his way to a healthy weight—and a much more positive outlook on life!
