A man named Bill was on his way to his home in Missouri after going on a fishing trip in Arkansas. He stopped a rest stop on the way to throw away trash and use the restroom. He wasn’t going to be out of his car for very long, so he left the door open and his car still running. When he returned, he couldn’t believe his eyes: there was a dog sitting in his passenger seat. The dog was very thin, so he gave her the only food he had: a Rice Krispie Treat. She quickly scarfed the food down and sat there looking terrified. Bill knew the dog needed help, and she did the only thing she knew how to do to ask for it. The dog found just the right person that day: Bill and his wife are dog lovers who have taken in several stray dogs. So, Bill sent his wife a photo of the dog and she asked what they were going to name her. She was going home with her new dad Bill.
They named her River. She was terrified still when he arrived at home, scared to leave the comfort of the car where she had probably first been shown love. Eventually, he picked her up and carried her inside, where she met her new family: three rescue dogs, a rescue cat, and a human brother. The pack accepted their new doggy sister immediately. Then, Bill gave her a warm bath and washed off the blood and mud caking her fur and picked the ticks off of her body. Then, she was given a warm bed on the floor. River woke up the next morning in her new forever home and it was obvious to Bill and his wife that she had been someone’s pet at one point—she was potty trained and very well behaved.
They took River to the vet for a checkup, where it was discovered she had heartworms, tapeworms and wounds that indicated she had been in a fight at one point. But, she got the medication she needed and was quickly on her way to recovery. She has a great life now—thanks to her quick thinking that day when she jumped into the car.
Two women, Erin Einbender and Laura Berryman, are volunteers for the Austin Pets Alive! Group in Texas. One Saturday, they headed out with several adoptable dogs so they could shoot photos of them for the group’s website. They were almost finished photographing one of the dogs when they got an unexpected visitor: a stray dog walked right up to them and sat down. The women grabbed a leash and were able to attach it to his collar, realizing he was incredibly friendly. He was smiling, wagging his tail, and politely asking for pets, too. The pit bull was actually wearing a collar, but it had no tags. So, the women walked around the neighborhood asking if anyone recognized the dog. Unfortunately, no one knew him and they couldn’t locate his family.
So, they took him back to their photo studio and decided to get some photos of him. At first, he wasn’t interested in sitting still for pictures, but some tasty treats quickly changed his mind. They put a beautiful red print bandana around his neck and he just sat there and posed—he was a natural. The photoshoot was fun, but they really needed to help him find his family. So, Erin and Laura loaded him up in the car and headed to the Austin Animal Shelter. They were going to ask that he be scanned for a microchip. He loved being the car, smiling and sitting quietly the entire way to the shelter. Unfortunately, he did not have a microchip.
So, the women took those beautiful photos they had taken of the dog and began posting his picture on lost dog websites online. They were hoping his family would spot him, and sure enough that’s just what happened. His family came forward and picked him up the following day—his name was Zeus and they were desperately trying to find him. After his glamorous day of being a dog model, he’s now safely back home with his family!
For a man named Don Wargowsky, hiking is one of his favorite pastimes. He’s an avid climber and has a great passion for the activity, so when he was approached by a group to lead them on a hike at Mera Peak and Baruntse, he jumped on the chance. The two mountains are located in Nepal, and it can be a very lonely, quiet area to hike. They aren’t many animals around, as the conditions are typically harsh, cold and snowy. But something completely out of the ordinary happened when Don and his crew headed up the mountain: they were accompanied by a stray dog. They were ten days into their trek at were at approximately 18,000 feet up on top of a glacier when the pup, who was later named Baru, seemed to show up out of nowhere.
Don said he had remembered seeing the dog earlier when they were in the village below the mountain, and he realized she had probably decided to join the group on their adventure. No one could believe that the dog had somehow found her way up the treacherous conditions on the mountain. The climb was difficult, even for the humans who had plenty of hiking gear to assist them in the journey. The dog really didn’t need anything to help her. While they had remembered she was fairly shy in the village, she was very happy and energetic with her new friends up on the mountain.
Don says it’s common for dogs to tag along on hikes, but he figured Baru the dog wouldn’t stick around for long. But the dog proved him wrong, following them all the way up the treacherous conditions of the mountain. Once she realized she could trust the humans, Baru even agreed to sleep inside the tent on those cold nights. They even split their food with her—and she made it through the entire journey with them. Once they got back down from the mountain, one of the local guide named Kaji adopted her into his family. Don says he plans to head back to Nepal to visit her soon!
Charlie the golden retriever is eleven years old, which means he is now a senior and has slowed down quite a bit in his old age. A few years ago, Charlie had a terrible case of glaucoma that caused him to go blind and eventually, he had his eyes removed to alleviate his pain. While Charlie learned to cope with his sudden loss of sight, his family noticed that he seemed depressed and definitely slowed down from his former energetic days. But that all changed recently when someone new came into Charlie’s life—someone who brightened his spirits and helped him see the world again.
Charlie’s owners, a woman named Chelsea Stipe and her husband, love Charlie very much and knew he was still happy. However, they had a feeling he needed a companion in his life to help him through his older years. So, they brought home a little golden retriever puppy they named Maverick. The puppy had a major impact on Charlie—more than they could have ever imagined. Charlie and Maverick bonded immediately, and his family noticed that Maverick’s puppy energy was rubbing off his brother. Charlie was acting much more playful and happy since his puppy brother came along. The pair can often be found playing and romping around, even fighting over toys.
Maverick is just a few months old, but he seems to realize that Charlie needs his help navigating the world. The puppy will place toys in front of the blind Charlie, and when Charlie gets up to move, Maverick is right by his side to help him. When they go for walks together, Charlie helps keep Maverick in a straight line and away from any danger. Maverick often lays next to Charlie, trying to comfort him so he knows he is not alone. While Charlie is older and no one knows how long he has to live, one thing is certain: he has Maverick to help him through his twilight years with joy and happiness.
It was just an average day for two small boys who were playing outside in their home country of Romania. However, everything changed for them both when they saw something unusual: a small puppy that was missing most of its fur. It was obvious to the pair of boys that the puppy was sick and needed their help. While most children may not know how they could help a sick little puppy, one of the boys jumped into action and knew just what to do to offer his help. The one boy, named Alex, told his friend that he knew someone who could help the puppy.
So, he picked up the tiny, hairless puppy and carried him to a neighbor in his village. He knew the neighbor, a woman named Aura, helps to take care of all the dogs in the village in need of help and rehabilitation. It was to important to little Alex that the puppy, who was later given the name Felix, was safe. So much so, he wouldn’t go back outside to play until the neighbor assured him everything was going to be okay. The rescue group Barking Mad Dog Rescue, who helps dogs in the area, said they are thrilled that even children understand the importance of helping animals in distress.
Poor little Felix was in rough shape when he arrived in the care of the rescue group. He was underweight, had mange all over his body, and also had fleas. His fur was missing in most parts of his body, so he was given special medicated baths to help. Luckily, Felix quickly began to recover and his fur even started to grow back. In a twist of fate, the rescue took in two other dogs that were dumped in a bag outside their facility—and it turns out they are Felix’s brothers. Thanks to the quick thinking of the little boy, the puppies are all together now and well on their way to recovery.
Jake the border collie was just five years old when his life completely changed. The sweet dog was surrendered to the local animal shelter in Corsicana, Texas and he was confused. His owner was elderly and unfortunately did not have time to care for Jake any longer. Jake did not understand what was happening and why, and the shelter was a loud, confusing place for him. The happy go lucky dog became very sad and withdrawn. The shelter staff was concerned for Jake after all he had gone through. Jake was devastated and then he was in the shelter, so they contacted the Rescue Dogs Rock NYC organization.
Jake was used to the freedom of being in a home and going outside, and the small kennel was hard for him. He was a very active dog, and the restriction was especially difficult, so the rescue group was jut what Jake needed. Unfortunately, protocol means that Jake had to be in quarantine for three weeks before he could travel to New York. He spent those weeks in another kennel in a vet’s office before he could make the trip. While he waited, there was no one who came forward to adopt the sweet, beautiful dog. Sadly, there were on foster homes available for Jake so he found himself in another cage.
So, the staff began spreading the word about Jake on social media—and it did the trick. His forever family found him and took him home; they even caught him smiling on his “freedom ride” to his new house. Best of all, sweet Jake is fitting in perfectly with his new family and his doggy sibling. The sad, confused dog is finally happy and smiling and playing like he was meant to all this time. While he’s been through a lot in his five years of life he is finally safe and finally happy, too!
It was just a few months ago that a Staffordshire bull terrier named Snoop was the saddest, loneliest dog on Earth. Poor Snoop was dumped on the streets by his owner along with all of his belongings and the entire scenario was caught on camera. Poor Snoop was so confused by what was happening, and he began to jump on the car to try to get back in the car with his owner, who then drove off and left him all alone. After all he went through, Snoop finally had a complete turnaround when he was adopted by his new dad, a man named Laurence Squire. Laurence saw Snoop’s story on the local news and couldn’t believe what had happened to the sweet dog. He said was clear that Snoop was a loyal companion and he decided to adopt the dog into his home.
Snoop is a loyal dog, but his rescuers from the RSPCA say that he is very prone to separation anxiety because of his past. Laurence works from home, making it an ideal situation so that Snoop is never alone and spends plenty of time with his new dad. Snoop has only been in his new home for a few weeks, but he is already making himself very comfortable. Snoop has a wonderful life now, with plenty of comfortable places to sleep and an endless supply of love and affection. Snoop just loves to spend time around his favorite human Laurence. He also enjoys taking naps, and playing outside and running around the yard. But he never lets his dad out of his sight while he’s outside playing.
Laurence says the situation worked out perfectly with Snoop and he’s the perfect dog for him. Snoop finally has the loving home he has always deserved, and his sad past is finally behind him. Laurence says when Snoop came home the first time he jumped right up onto the couch and made himself right at home. His very favorite spot is to sit on the back of the sofa and he also loves to curl up by the fire and take a nice long nap.
A dog named Meatloaf was abandoned on the streets of Florida, leaving him to fend for himself. While wandering the streets he was hit by a car and the person who hit him called animal control for help. That’s where the Rescue Animals in Need (RAIN) organization pulled him for help. Poor Meatloaf had experienced an accident, but it was clear he had been through much more. Meatloaf had mange and skin infections, was twenty pounds underweight and also had an ear infection in both ears. He was terrified of everything and had injuries on his face and body that make rescuers think he was used as a bait dog.
Meatloaf had been through so much and he was so scared, but he never stopped wagging his tail when rescuers worked with him. He was placed in a foster home to recover and once he was better it was time to find him a forever home. His foster mom knew it was important to find just the right family for him so he had the best possible chance to recover from his past. Then, a woman named Brittney Strugala came along. Brittney was helping her friend find a dog, but when she saw Meatloaf she knew he would be the perfect dog for her and her fiancé. They already had a pitbull named Sky, but there was one problem: their apartment wouldn’t allow them to have a second dog. So, Brittney and her fiancé moved so they could adopt Meatloaf.
While Meatloaf had already recovered from his physical ailments, he was still very scared. He was easily startled by loud noises and new experiences, but in his new home he was comforted by his dog sister sky and his new parents. Meatloaf is now inseparable from his dog sister and family and is finally coming out of his shell and his goofy, loving personality has emerged.
A puppy mill was recently broken up and one of the dogs rescued from the horrible situation was a little poodle who, like the other dogs, was absolutely terrified. The dog, whose name is now Jordan Knight, was rescued from a breeder in Georgia who had inhumane conditions. The breeding operation was broken up by the police and the dogs all went to foster homes and rescue groups to recover from the terrible situation. But for little Jordan, arriving in a foster home really brought to life how terrible the living conditions were in his previous living situation. Jordan’s foster mom is a woman named Melissa Lentz and she knew Jordan was scared, so she did all she could to make him feel safe and give him his space.
She watched over him though and gave him his own dog bed so he could rest. Melissa watched as Jordan walked over to the bed but did not lie down. Instead, the little poodle rested his head on the edge of the bed and then fell asleep standing up. Jordan had spent his entire life in the puppy mill, and things were so cramped there that Jordan had to sleep standing up in his cage. Even though there was plenty of space to lie down and sleep, he was so used to standing up while he slept that he still did it in his foster home. With time, though, he realized things were different in his foster home. He quickly bonded with his fellow dogs in the home and he soon realized he could lie down and rest in a variety of locations in the home.
Jordan even got a special spa day and got a warm bath and was wrapped in towels—a new experience that he really enjoyed. He even realized he could snuggle on the couch with his fellow foster dogs and even sat on his foster mom’s lap for the first time. After a few days, he finally fell asleep on his dog bed, lying down this time and finally feeling at home.
For a little dog named Pluto, fashion is everything. The little dog is very sweet and also very stylish—but his outfits are a great combination of both fashion and function. Pluto was rescued by a woman named Lily and her family, and not long after he came home with them they noticed that something was wrong. Little Pluto was constantly shivering and they were worried something was wrong with him. They took Pluto to the veterinarian to ensure it was not a serious health issue. The doctor said it was probably anxiety that was causing him to shake, but Lily and the rest of his family thought it was likely because he was so small and so cold. So, Lily tested out her theory and bought Pluto a little jacket to wear. The moment they put it on him he stopped shaking. So, that began Pluto’s deep love for all things clothing and fashion.
Lily knew little Pluto couldn’t have just one option for his clothing, so she purchased over a dozen coats, shirts, and even hats for him to wear. She wanted him to be warm and to be fashionable, too. But the more clothing that he had, the more Lily realized there was a little problem: where could she store all of his clothing? That’s when Lily’s dad stepped in to provide a unique solution to the problem. Lily’s dad took just a few days to build a small closet for Pluto to store his clothing. Lily was thrilled to finally have a place for Pluto’s clothing, but he was also excited by the closet. He loved getting up in the morning and going to his closet to help pick out his outfit.
Lily says her dad is an expert at building things and was so happy that he put his skills to work for Pluto, who he lovingly refers to as his grandson.
