Bulldog Named “World’s Ugliest Dog”

April Livingston | June 26th, 2018

There were a total of fourteen contestants, but there could only be one winner. That winner was a bulldog who goes by the name Zsa Zsa. The event, held in Petaluma, California, has been held for thirty years now. The contest is meant to promote the importance of pet adoption by celebrating the very “unique” looks of dogs that have been rescued from shelters and puppy mills. While every dog has its day, this day belonged to Zsa Zsa and her unique look.

Zsa Zsa and her family traveled thirty hours to the contest in California from their home in Anoka, Minnesota. The dog is certainly one to turn heads, with her severe underbite and big broad shoulders. She is nothing if not unique and really captivated the crowd’s attention from the moment she stepped on stage that day. Though Zsa Zsa, who is named after socialite and actress Zsa Zsa Gabor, has a great life now, things were not always so glamorous for her. The pup’s life began in a Missouri puppy mill. It’s there that she spent the first five years of her life breeding and giving birth to litter after litter of puppies. In 2014, she was given up by her owners, who no longer had any use for her, and that’s when the Underdog Rescue group stepped in.

The rescue had Zsa Zsa spayed, and helped her get healthy again. The sweet pup has been through so much in her life, so it took her some time to understand that she was finally safe. After she was ready for a new home, that’s when her family, including her mom Megan Brainard adopted her. She’s fit right in with their family and now she’s a big star, too! Winning the “World’s Ugliest Dog” competition means Zsa Zsa has her own big pink trophy, and a $1,500 prize. Oh, and bragging rights!
