It was mother’s day weekend and while many people were headed to brunch with their moms or visiting family, a shelter in Texas had a truly sad encounter. It started with an unexpected visit on what is normally a happy day. A breeder came into the shelter with a very sick dog with matted fur and dropped her at the reception desk. They had just one request: they wanted the dog to be euthanized. The employees at the shelter took one look at the dog’s belly and realized the sad truth: the dog had been a mother herself many times in the time she had been alive. It was mother’s day, a day to celebrate moms and the shelter staff couldn’t help but want to do something for the sweet mother dog.
Kerry Anechiarico is the executive director of the Dallas Dog Rescue Rehab Reform (Dallas DogRRR) and said that it’s quite common for people to leave animals at their rescue. Many of them are sick and afraid to die alone, but they weren’t going to let that happen to this dog, who they named Abigail. It was mother’s day and they knew the sweet dog did nothing but love her puppies and her humans in her life, so they were going to help her instead of euthanizing her. They took the poodle mix who is believed to be around 9 years old to the nearest vet clinic for help. It wasn’t going to be a smooth road to recovery, because her belly was covered in bulges, but they were going to try.
They started by giving her a much needed bath and haircut which helped her feel better immediately. She was so sweet with them, despite all she had suffered in her 9 years. She is getting stronger and when she is ready she will undergo surgery for the tumors in her belly. In the meantime, she is enjoying relaxing in her foster home and is a very loving, sweet dog.
