Things were not going well for a dog named Stevie. Nicole Simone first saw him via a video clip that showed the dog running into walls and spinning in circles and she knew she needed to help the two year old pup. Stevie was found by animal control wandering the streets of Texas close to the Mexico border. He was placed in a crowded kennel with other dogs because no one realized he was different. Stevie was born with microphthalmia which causes deafness and partial blindness. He was attacked by other dogs in his kennel, and that’s what caused a leg wound.
An Austin, Texas rescue group called Addicus Legacy stepped in to help and removed Stevie from the shelter. His special needs meant it was going to be tough to find a foster home for him. Nicole, who works for Redemption Paws in Canada stepped in to help him. Nicole couldn’t believe how sweet and kind Stevie was, despite all he had gone through and his disabilities, he is very trusting of humans. After a visit to the veterinarian, it was determined Stevie was in pain. He had a terrible eye infection which was painful and meant both of his eyes needed to be removed and he also had heartworm.
Amazingly, Stevie was easily adaptable and loving and does well on a leash and understands commands by touch. Stevie really needs a family now, one that will give him both structure and empathy. Stevie needs a special home that is willing to be patient with him, because he has lots of puppy energy and some anxiety based on his condition. He tends to bark when he is anxious and that can be too much for people. While Stevie has disabilities he has plenty of personality, too: he is sweet and silly and would love a home with a soft bed and plenty of patience.
