Atlanta Shelter Needs Help

April Livingston | September 1st, 2019

In Atlanta, Georgia two animal shelters are facing a terrible crisis. They have homeless animals pouring into the facility and there is really no end in sight. The facilities are trying to keep up, but sadly they are not built to accommodate so many animals inside their walls. Karen Hirsch, the public relations director for LifeLine Animal Project, who manages the Fulton and DeKalb County Animals Services, says the shelter took in 1,500 total animals in July of 2018. In July of 2019, they took in a total of 1,804 animals at both shelters—meaning they now have a total of 304 animals in the shelters. This puts a huge strain on the shelter and its staff.

They are trying desperately to save their lives, so each kennel is holding up to five or six dogs inside. While the dogs piled together on a single bed might look cute, it is stressful and causes issues. It is stressful for animals to be in the shelter environment, and that means animals are triggered and fights often break out among dogs. With such limited space, it’s difficult to find the room to house an aggressive dog alone. July and August are typically the busiest time of year for the shelters, but this year has been busier than ever—and no one knows quite why.

The shelter put out a desperate plea for help on Facebook recently, asking for foster homes to help house dogs. Those who volunteer receive a starter pack of food, pet supplies, and a crate. Anyone is welcome to foster a dog for any length of time. The shelter is going to waive adoption fees during the month of August to encourage adoption and are hoping community members step up to help dogs in need. Anyone in Atlanta who wants to help can foster through their website: https://www.lifelineanimal.org/how-to-help/foster or contribute to the shelter’s Amazon Wishlist: https://www.lifelineanimal.org/how-to-help/ways-to-give/our-wish-list
